How do I practice Right Livelihood?

Greetings from Chiang Mai. Here's a summary of our recent workshop where we delved into an enriching discussion on fostering harmony within ourselves, with our neighbors, and society at large. Our focus centered on the concept of the Right Livelihood, an integral aspect of the Eightfold Path.

Right Livelihood mandates engaging in an occupation that not only earns us a living but also creates greater happiness, wisdom, and well-being while relieving suffering in ourselves and others. Conversely, we should avoid occupations that produce harm to ourselves or other living beings, such as selling drugs, toxic drinks, weapons, etc.

How can we practice this in our daily lives? Practicing the Right Livelihood is simple and easy. For instance, feeling grateful when waking up, greeting co-workers or neighbors, and complimenting or cheering friends, loved ones, and family members. These seemingly small actions, which are free and easy, can have a significant impact on someone's day/life.

Personally, I begin each day by chanting, "Today is going to be a great, productive, happy, lovely day," even before opening my eyes. This is a psychological aspect that influences our minds with wholesome thoughts, providing positive energy for the day. It's simple: waking up happy tends to lead to feeling happier throughout the day.

Another example is when I encounter someone else jogging in the morning, like me, I wave my hand or smile at them. Often, people smile back, initiating the foundation for a harmonious society that we can aim to build. I hope this summary provides you with ideas on how to practice Right Livelihood in your daily life.
